A real desk, a real chair, and enough of the water to know which way the wind went. The Boathouse from $429 Top floor · king + sofa bed · 520 sq ft · private terrace One of them, under the rafters, with a wood stove we light for you and a terrace that gets the last of the sun. It sells out first and it books longest.

Some of these are per person per night. Some are once, for the whole stay. The difference is where hotel bills go wrong, so we put it on the label and on the line.

Breakfast at the long table $24 per person, per night 7:30 to 10:00 in the ground-floor room. Eggs done to order, bread from the bakery six doors down, and one pot of coffee that keeps coming. Dinner for two in the parlour $110 once, for the stay One sitting, one evening, four courses off a menu that changes when the fishmonger says so. Eight seats only, so we ask which night when we confirm. An hour in the harbour sauna $65 once, for the stay The cedar cabin at the bottom of the yard, booked privately for sixty minutes. Cold plunge is the lake, in season, at your own discretion. A spot in the yard $18 per night Fourteen spots behind the house, and they go to whoever reserved them. Street parking on Ridgemount is free after 6:00 PM and honestly usually fine. One well-behaved dog $40 once, for the stay Alder and the Boathouse only — those two have hard floors and their own doors. Bed, bowls and a towel for the lake are already in the room. Checkout at 2:00 PM Included because you are booking direct Three hours past the standard 11:00. It is $45 through a third-party site, and it is the single most requested thing at this desk.

The house

Twelve rooms in a house built in 1911 for a harbour pilot. It has been an inn since 1988 and it still behaves like a house: stairs that creak in the same three places, and a parlour that fills up at about nine.

Ground

The parlour — fire lit from October through April, honesty trolley, no bar staff after 10:00 PM
The long table — breakfast 7:30–10:00, and yours to work at the rest of the day

Second

Five Wren rooms, four facing the water
The linen room, which is also where the iron lives
One flight up, no elevator, and we will carry bags without being asked twice

Third

Three Rowan corner rooms, tubs in the windows
The reading landing — two chairs, one lamp, the best window in the house
Quietest floor. Nothing above you but the Boathouse.

Things we do not have

No elevator. Alder is the only room you can reach without stairs.
No gym and no pool. The waterfront trail runs 22 km from the gate, and the lake is right there.
No room phones. The guest app is the phone, and the desk answers it.
No television in Alder or Wren. Rowan and the Boathouse have one each.
Thin walls on the second floor. If you are a light sleeper, ask for the third.
Poor cell reception on the lake side. The Wi-Fi is genuinely fast; the bars on your phone will not be.

A proper pub with a fire and a dartboard nobody is good at. Kitchen stops at 9:30; the room does not.

Our breakfast bread comes from here. Closed Mondays, which is why Monday breakfast is oatcakes and nobody complains.

Two Creeks Boat Hire

Kayaks and one very slow electric launch, May to October. They will not go out if the wind is over 20 knots, and they are right not to.

Second-hand, two floors, sorted by a system only the owner understands. The maritime section is upstairs at the back.

One screen, ninety seats, a projectionist who introduces the film. Two showings a night and a matinee on Sunday.

Mostly jazz, mostly reasonable. There is a listening chair and you are allowed to use it for a long time.

Getting in the door

Three steps to the front door. The side entrance off the yard is level, and it is the one we use for luggage.
Alder rooms are step-free from that side entrance. Doorways are 32 inches; the accessible washroom door is 34.
No elevator to the upper floors, and we will say so on the phone before you book.
The commuter rail station is a 14-minute walk or a 4-minute taxi. We will meet a late train if you ask.
Fourteen parking spots in the yard, two of them wide and beside the level door.
